AUKUS
There are legitimate questions about whether the $368 billion AUKUS agreement is the best use of public money in defence of Australia. There are no guarantees, in fact there is a likelihood that Australia will never see any submarines delivered.
If elected as the Independent MP for Casey I pledge to take these policies to Parliament:
- I support an independent and transparent review of AUKUS.
- I support Australia signing and ratifying the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Former Prime Ministers Paul Keating and Malcolm Turnball, former foreign minister Bob Carr and former foreign Minister Gareth Evans have also questioned AUKUS with their opinions ranging from ferocious criticism ‘unfair and dumb’ to cautious doubt. There are also questions about the risk of losing sovereignty over Australian defence resources.
Independent MPs, Zoe Daniel, Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender have all raised questions. Is an unequivocal and long-term alignment with the United States in Australia’s best interest?
I have signed the ICAN Candidates pledge in support of the treaty on the prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
